than sports and as the university grew, having to deal with the complexity of the Title IX issues...etc. But if I'm President Bednar and I have the chance to double the number of students while increasing funding and the academic prowess of my institution, I'm all over it.
But times and challenges have changed. Back in that era, I heard directly from President Eyering that the brethren were concerned about being a Wasatch front church. They wanted to be global and limit growth of BYU locally while expanding education across the world.
Awesome goal. Totally understandable.
BUT...BYU Provo offers a better spiritual and educational experience than any other institution. ANd most of those students are going outside of Utah at a higher percentage than the other Utah universities. In other words, one of the best ways to build the church throughout the world and throughout the US, is to have a stronger, bigger BYU that is more accessible to international and non-Utah students.
That's what's changed. The acquisition of Provo HS was the start of the new line of thinking — in my opinion.
