Is it really the OL’s fault or does some of the blame belong to the QB who...
...can’t make quick decisions and get rid of the ball in a timely manner and instead has to hold onto it and run around until he sees an obvious target?

We have had a string of mobile QB’s who compensate for their inability to consistently make quick decisions and timely throws by tucking and running around in the backfield until a WR breaks off their routes and gets open.

This puts an undue burden on the OL to have to hold their blocks for an inordinate amount of time and, w/o having eyes in the backs of their heads, intuitively know where their QB is zigging and zagging so he can shade his block away from the QB.

This is why Zach’s sack percentage after 2 seasons is almost 8%. By contrast Romney’s sack percentage last season was 4.4% (pretty remarkable for a freshman).

A bonus in this is by getting rid of the ball quicker you not only avoid sacks but you give your receivers time to make a move, get the defender to miss, and then get yards after the catch. It gets the ball into their hands quicker, often before the defense has had time to react and close. In the Utah St game last season both Hall and Romney did an amazing job for freshman QB’s in getting the ball out quickly and as a result half of the 417 yds passing that BYU tallied was yards after the catch. This extends drives and puts more points on the board.
