I’ve been critical enough about the coaching staff and particularly the job they are doing on defense. However, these comments are not an indictment of the coaching staff. They are an indictment of the player making the comments. Just watch the film. You can’t really coach up physicality. You have to have it in your heart. IMO he could’ve become a good player in time but he was stung by the curse of hype—unwarranted hype. Instead of talking about him being the best Kaufusi ever, he should’ve had to earn it day to day. The fact is, the coaching staff did not do him wrong. In fact, they gave him favored treatment which turned out to bite both him and them in the fanny. Proves again that you should never do that. In that regard, I think it is a fair criticism of the coaching staff. Establish a culture where players earn their time. I think Kalani is learning that and is going through some bumps and bruises with egos. And to BYU nation everywhere, can we please temper the hype. It hasn’t been earned lately by anyone.
