The Germans were so bad that even the Japanese seem tame in comparison. If Nazi
Germany hadn’t been part of the war, with the genocides and extermination camps, then the Japanese would have been vilified much more, IMO.
The atomic bombs and firebombing of Tokyo probably helped them also in that regard, as you said. Almost as many Japanese civilians were killed in just those 3 bombing raids as the number of American servicemen killed in the entire war. This generated a measure of sympathy for them.
