4 groups of 5 teams (Top 20 teams).
Group teams into 4 tiers based on current standings.
Randomly select from each tier with some constraints (3 max from western or eastern conference).
Play 8 games (2 v each team).
Have an 8 team playoff with top-2 teams from each group.
I like this better than the 1-16 team seeding scenario, in any case. It gives interesting teams on the fringe a legitimate change to make the playoffs (like the Blazers and Memphis). It also prevents boring first-round match-ups like the Bucks v. Magic or Lakers v. Nets (w/o Kyrie or KD).
Either way, I'm pretty much in favor of the NBA trying out every wonky thing they've been mulling over for decades.
If there's a year to shake things up and try out 2-3 new things, this is it.
