It is part of ASL, and is pretty standardized. Sign language uses more than just the hands, the body/facial
movements are part of it. Just as various English speakers have different styles and accents, ASL speakers will as well, so there will be differences in emphasis in the movements. Source, I have two deaf grandparents.
