I don't agree with time elements. If I tell you I'll pay you next month, you would expect payment in June not July.
And if you asked me to borrow a cup of sugar from the next door neighbor, I'd go to the 1st door to the left or right. Not skip the immediate next door and go to the second door.
But, I'm not arguing what people understand next Thursday to mean. It's a phrase that is now commonly understood.
