I don’t but buy the “but everyone else does it” line of reasoning.
We have a set of rules that outlines this community’s standard of behavior and we all agree to it.
As you say- there are plenty of other places for free for all debate and name calling. The internet is a big place. That Cougarboard makes an effort (and admittedly we sometimes fail) to try to keep debate somewhat civil makes it some place different

I literally can't think of a worse place to discuss politics than CB. Facebook, truck stop, 7th circle of hell, etc.
