I was there. Not in June, but in mid-May (with a BYU performing group).
We were supposed to be going to the Beijing Zoo, but got pulled into the traffic and were right there adjacent to the square in the middle of the biggest protest I've ever seen. We were there for several hours before we could find our way out. It was the same day that Gorbachev visited the city - May 18 I think - and was considered the height of the protests. We had strict instructions to not say or do anything that seemed to support either side of the debate. The city had enacted martial law and they had moved outside military to the periphery of the city. Subways were shut down to thwart the military. Students were lying across the roads to block the military from entering the city. The Beijing police force stood with the students on the front line of the protest. It was an amazing experience to feel the momentum of change and imagine all the possibilities for China. I was never afraid. It was devastating when I saw today's headlines 31 years ago. Our tour guides were some of the student protestors (by night) and I've always wondered what happened to them.
