Tonight: shoutout to Filip Forsberg, the prize of maybe the most lopsided trade
of the past decade. It’s crazy to me that the Capitals have had so much success since this deal despite basically giving away a top prospect before he even played a game in the NHL. Traded Forsberg at the 2013 trade deadline for Martin Erat and Michael Latta. Erat played on the top line with Ovechkin and Backstrom but only had 1 goal in 9 games and didn’t record a point in a first round exit. He was traded the next season for mostly spare parts after scoring 1 goal in 53 games for Washington that year. Latta scores 4 goals in 113 games for the Caps and didn’t have Ben get a qualifying offer when he became an RFA. Hasn’t played an NHL game since. Forsberg, meanwhile, is, uh, pretty good at hockey. One of the most creative and skilled left wingers in the NHL, excellent possession metrics, and on a solid cap hit.

This is my favorite goal from the linked post, though the other 3 are very good. Forsberg has such quick hands and great anticipation.

Before anyone asks: not related to Peter, although he is Swedish
