Mike's problem was layups and free throws
He could shoot the 3, but terrible from the line and missed more layups than probably any BYU player ever.

His overall shooting percentage was lower than his 3 point percentage.

His freshman year he was a 50% FT shooter, 45.9% 3 point shooter, and 6 for 20 on non-3 point shots, most of which came point blank with no defender. His junior year he made 3 of 16 non-3 point shots, also mostly point blank with no defender.

So the reason he was on a leash was because he couldn't be in the game at the end of a tight one because he was the obvious guy to foul. Or you could just play him so tight on the perimeter that it didn't matter if he got by you because he wasn't going to score.

That said, he contributed in the way he could and was on some good teams that were really fun to watch. And if the other team decided to make him be the guy to beat them, it made the Marriott Center electric as he rained down 3s.
