It's part of our culture because most people agree to it
The dumbest parts of our culture are all bound to be things a large number of people don't think are dumb.
In this case, those who don't think it's dumb do happen to be wrong IMO.
It's a marketing strategy that conjured a "tradition" out of thin air. No rational basis for it.
