I make very clear that kids need to stay where they can see me at all times.
With the reminder that if they can’t see me then I can’t see them. The same goes for after dark when they need to be even closer to maintain a visual of me or my headlamp.

This usually needs to be reminded when hiking and kids naturally want to run in front of the group.

High wilderness areas are very disorientating, especially for children who have no clue of the lay of the land.

Also, re-emphasize the old advice that if they suddenly find themselves lost to hug a tree (stay put) and shout for help. People get into trouble when they frantically start moving in what they think is the right direction.
