We were in Rio Grande National Forest near the border of Colorado and New Mexico.
In this case, I'm guessing the bear didn't really have time to assess the size of my dog. His bark is incredibly loud and low. The instant loud noise coming right at him probably just startled him.

Watching these survival and mountain man shows it surprises me how bears and large cats are afraid of smaller dogs.
