Pushing the plunger bypasses the safety reset switch as well as the communication between the thermostat and the unit. I’d try to find the reset switch if you haven’t already, and if that doesn’t work follow the power back with a multimeter as previously described. The good news is that if your unit turns on and cools when manually holding the plunger, the core of the unit is good. Fixing anything else is much less difficult/expensive.
