$1M probably isn't going to provide enough income to live on
at age 50 if a good chunk is tied up in retirement accounts that penalize early withdrawals (i.e., before age 59.5).

Especially, when you factor in the cost of health care and still being more than a decade away from being eligible for medicare or social security.

And if you're still supporting children, good luck!

Maybe you could swing it if you were a relatively healthy empty-nester with a paid off mortgage, no expensive hobbies, and a modest travel budget.
