My boat holds 80 gallons so I pack in forty or fifty. It's enough to top up and keep me going for a few days. I have a wakeboat so it's different than what you will be renting. Most of the rental boats are so spartan on the interior that you could carry gas on the inside rather than strapped to the swim platform.
