They're not legal tender, but if someone will accept them, you can pay with them

It's no different than if someone will accept chickens in exchange for whatever you want to buy, then you can use chickens as currency.

In the civil war, for a short period of time, postage stamps were given the status as legal tender due to a coin shortage. John Gault created brass coins with postage stamps embedded in them, and made a small fortune selling them. His genius plan that made it work was to sell advertising on the side of the coin opposite the side the postage stamp was embedded.  Here are some examples:
