There are better answers already than I can give, but one thing I have noticed

is that my company refused to hire people that didn’t have a degree. Didn’t actually matter what kind of degree, just that they had one. He could get that degree and do something completely unrelated, but it can still help him.

So, if after getting the degree he decides to do something else, he still has more options than without the degree.
