When there are only 3 or 5 rounds, the scoring needs to be more discerning than boxing where there are abundant rounds I watch nearly every UFC event, and I am convinced that the system needs to change. There are too many fighters getting equal 10-9 credit for winning “toss up” close rounds as their opponent for getting clear victories in other rounds and the result is more of what we saw tonight with Max Holloway wrongly losing.
My proposal:
10-9 is a toss up round with no overwhelming winner. Maybe one fighter is slightly more offensive or has an an extra inconsequential take down.
10-8 is where one fighter very clearly won a round, but did not inflict exceptional damage.
10-7 is a dominant round with damage (knockdowns, numerous major strikes, stunned opponent, devastating ground and pound, Etc.)
This would not eliminate controversy, but it would majority help.
