Tonight’s hockey content is the first time a goalie ever shot and scored a goal
Ron Hextall of the Flyers (unrelated: he was completely insane, even for a goalie) in 1989. One of only seven NHL goalies to ever do it (most recent was Pekka Rinne just this past January) and the only one to do it twice. The distinction of shooting and scoring is relevant - other goalies have been credited with goals by being the last player on their team to touch the puck before the opposing team scores an own goal with the goalie pulled. Billy Smith did it that way in 1979 as the first goalie to be credited with a goal, but Hextall here is the first to ever do it with an intentional shot.
