Been watching old games from the 80s and 90s. Bunch of random thoughts:
I think Itula Mili is maybe the most talented/athletic TE to ever play at BYU. He was SO smooth and fast. I forgot there was a season that LaVell lined him up at tailback.

Hunter the punter was unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it. He was like 6'7" and 290 lbs but had amazing flexibility and "touch'. He absolutely CRUSHED the ball.

I forgot just how good Ryan Hancock was. He was a gamer! I wonder if he regrets turning to baseball and not pursuing the NFL. I also wonder what might've happened to John Walsh if Hancock had stayed.

Eric Drage was an amazing talent that is vastly underrated. Perhaps second only to Austin Collie.

Is there another team in CFB history who ran the draw trap more effectively than BYU in the 80s and early 90s? It was bread/butter for guys like Freddie Whittingham, Peter Tuipulotu, Mike Salido, etc.

Ty Freaking Detmer.

By the early to mid-90s it was evident that LaVell was starting to lose the competitive advantage of his unique passing offense. BYU was landing more elite talent than ever, yet wins were harder to achieve.

The QBs of the 80s and 90s garnered most of the accolades, but watching old tapes reminds me that the program was built around an innovative scheme and some brute hogs in the trenches. In the early 80s, especially, we really didn't have tremendous talent at the offensive skill positions... but we had an unorthodox passing offense and a lot of talent on the line. It took a decade to start landing elite skill players like Jamal Willis.
