I agree they are both good. I will say this about Phoenix's performance:

It was incredibly good. I disagree with you about "nothing special."

He made you absolutely hate that character. Despise. It wasn't just what the character did--the acting itself is what sealed it. You wanted him to die.

It's incredible.
