The Trib has battled the BYU University Police for years in disputes over

records. Whether or not you agree that a private university's police force should be subject to public records laws, its not surprising that the one major newspaper not owned by BYU's sponsoring institution is trying to get more access to those records. That's what journalists do — they try to get access to information.
