2020 BYU Football season
2020 is a crazy year.

Pro sports have taken on an identity different than previous years and ratings show how that business model doesn't work. Time for Pro sports to get back to what works: You are there to entertain us, PERIOD. CFB hasn't been immune to this pandemic either. An increase in positive COVID-19 testing has forced teams to postpone games. Some P5 conference hasn't even started their season and when they do, it will be a watered-down schedule. I guess Pac 12 is set for 5 Nov 2020?

Because of the crazy 2020, there MIGHT be some feelings where the committee will look at scheduling intent and consider that as a factor in rewarding this water down schedule. No question the strongest CFB schedule resides in the SEC. No team is at fault for this pandemic and the best thing always is play and WIN your schedule. To date, BYU has done exactly that and prior to Saturday was the 2nd team to win 5 games, the other SMU. BYU, prior to the season scheduled 6 P5 teams. Committee knows this and I believe BYU will be rewarded appropriately.

Best Chance for Undefeated Regular season.

BYU currently sits at 5-0, something that hasn't happened at BYU in a long long time. BYU performs better in up-tempo and you can see exactly how effective BYU is in forcing their will on teams. A complacent BYU offense doesn't bode well in the long run and it was refreshing to see BYU explode in the 4th quarter, really opening up the game and outscoring UH by more than 20 points.

Houston Cougars up to this point WAS the most difficult team on BYU schedule and while BYU had to come from behind to put this game away, BYU did exactly that and now sit at 5-0. ESPN recently put BYU best chance for an undefeated regular season at 30% which is 2nd best in the nation, only passed by OSU which as of today hasn't played a game.

BYU: THE QB factory of CFB

I am biased here, but with LaVell Edwards and the offensive mindset he and his assistants had really set the stage for what I believe produced the best QB CFB have seen. Incredible QB play from Virgil Carter to Zach Wilson. Passing at BYU, was just the norm and other teams learned from the master LaVell Edwards. The QB tradition at BYU continues with Zach Wilson. ESPN, Andre Ware spoke highly of Zack Wilson during the BYU @ UH game and placed Zach as the 2nd rank 2020 Top 5 QB for the 2021 NFL draft. Andre mentioned Zach's ability from prep to game day is just on another level. He can do a deep dive in discussing defensive backs and looking for opponents' tendencies. We see that in his play, his confidence in running this offense is giving every opportunity BYU has to produce points.

The Road to an Unbeaten Season

BYU at 5-0, according to ESPN has a 43% chance to win out, which is the highest in FBS. Ranking the remaining 5 games left on BYU schedule (hope there are 2 more games added) BYU has a 90% + chance of winning those games against really easy opponents, all at LES. NO reason what BYU can't product 45+ points against those teams. Coaches SHOULDN'T hold back this team, but encourage starters and relief players to score at will. The most difficult game for BYU will be the Boise State and BYU plays them in Boise, a place BYU has yet to win a game. Beat BSU and the remaining games at LES gives BYU an 85+ % of winning those games.

What does this mean for BYU IF they go undefeated? Easily a top 12 ranking and a shot at a New Year bowl game. That means revenue for BYU and a good launching pad for 2021. In some strange way, this year has been a blessing for BYU. Whoever thought BYU would be 5-0 so far?

BYU, you control your own destiny, so make the best of it. Losing 1 game won't get you into the NY 6 bowl games. Go for the undefeated season BYU and just put it all on the line.

Go Cougars!
