to move to 8... BYU has a path that isn’t entirely a foolish dream. In this year’s case, win out and we’d be in an 8 team playoff for sure.
I don’t believe a P5 invite will ever come, minus such chaos in the landscape that we get shuffled into a deal faster than the protesters can voice an opinion (unlikely). As Bama pointed out in the related thread... these decisions are made by university presidents. Religion and politics are too much of a factor in a world where some LDS views are becoming very far away from the norm.
I hate independence at times. But, in an 8 team playoff scenario, it’s more palatable. Say we had our original schedule this year and went 11-1. 11-1 against that schedule and you’d be ranked 7-10 depending on the timing and nature of the loss. So, you’d be in the mix. Might not make it, but 1 loss wouldn’t crush all hope.
We need a scenario where BYU can be in the mix without complete perfection (against the type of schedule Tom has been building).
And mostly... college football would just be so much better with an 8 team playoff.
5 conf champs. 3 at large bids. Baffles my mind they don’t see that it would be more lucrative.
