She was meeting my uncles who served with the Army in Germany during the Cold War. They are pretty blunt, so they wasted no time telling her that every day when they were in Germany in the 50s they feared The Red Horde falling upon them, and now their nephew was marrying one of them, which they thought was funny/ironic. They went on about this for 5-10 minutes.

She got really upset, and since I’m the only one in the family who speaks Russian she pulled me aside and asked why my uncles kept calling her a Red Whore. She had never heard of the word “Horde” or the phrase “Red Horde” so she thought the whole time they were calling her a Red Whore and that was why they couldn’t believe my brother would marry her.

Needless to say everyone was embarrassed when I straightened out the misunderstanding.
