past five years. Vander Esch is a keeper, but has been frequently injured. Jaylon Smith reminds me of Roy Williams (the safety) - he's a big, physically imposing guy who looks great on the field and makes one or two "Wow" plays a game, but frequently is out of position or takes plays off. Outside of Lawrence the defensive line is made up of cast offs from other teams. Jourdain Lewis is talented but is racking up PI's at a historic rate, and I'm not sure what to make of Auwuzie.
The cap situation going forward isn't great, but it's not TOO dire unless they sign Prescott to a bank-breaking contract. The only dead money they have for next year is $6 million for Frederick (that contract was fine and it's not their fault he had to retire) and $2 million for McCoy. But they definitely don't have money to re-sign Prescott PLUS go out and sign any meaningful free agents on the defensive side of the ball, so they'll have to draft well.
