Also keep in mind the 4% rule of thump.
Some people act like $2M is a ton of money but following that rule you are generating $80,000 a year to live off of.
While that isn't poor it isn't exactly rich either, especially in expensive markets. A younger family would still likely need additional income in many areas.

Keep in mind the answer should probably be a lot different for someone that is 25 and someone that is 55
