I liked the operetta style. I like that when I listen to the music I can picture
the movie. Danny Elfman and Tim Burton did several movies before this one and you can see how well they worked together. The music tells the story.
I saw Oingo Boingo a couple of times in the mid 80s. I am a big fan. His music stylistically is very different. In that way it is timeless, because there is nothing you can compare it to.
I'm not put off that you don't like it. To each his own. Overall Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favorite holiday movies.
