Scheduling one of those teams shows most, gives you an opportunity to eliminate the competition, all while bolstering your schedule.
If BYU made these moves and still won out, and the right teams lost...the playoff really is a possibility.
And IF BYU gets a playoff invite they legit become the Notre Dame of the west, and they don’t need a conference.
