Zooropa and Pop were ahead of their time.

I saw the world debut of The Fly on MTV in '91 and my young eyes were opened to a whole new world. The guitar distortion, the spacey deep then overlaid falsetto vocals, that duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh bass groove, the super-tight production. I felt like it dropped off another planet. And what made it even stranger was that these were the same guys who produced some of the most iconic classic rock style anthems of the 80's. Who knew they had this kind of reinvention in them?

Needless to say, I was at Tower Records in Portland at midnight four weeks later to pick up Achtung Baby.
