PAC12 didn't officially release them from the WSU game until Sunday. The PAC didn't announce the rescheduling of the UU ASU game until Sunday either.

They were looking for a backup plan, nothing more.

They likely reached out knowing their game with WSU was going to be cancelled to start a conversation with BYU.

However, they would have to play UU if that game doesn't happen.

Hence the cancellation clause which BYU didn’t want to commit to. Both acted in good faith.
