Also, something I did that really helped as the intermediate step was to install "feed eradicator." It kept me from seeing all sorts of stuff from people I didn't care about, while allowing me to be invited to events or even going specifically to see what family members had to say. But it took a little bit of work, and I was really just checking FB out of reflex.
