They said it was hard to compare schedules, but there's two fairly easy comparisons for BYU relative to teams ahead of them:

Cincinnati - beat Houston by 28 at home. We beat them by 27 on the road. Given the fact that there are no crowds, take out any home/away factor and that's essentially equal, yet Cincinnati is 7 places higher than we are (I actually think they should be ranked there or higher, so I'm not arguing that they should move down, just that we should move up)

Iowa State - LOST to Louisiana AT HOME by 17. Louisiana beat Texas State on the road basically in the second quarter and either lost or we're even in the other three. We thumped Texas State 52-14 at home. Again, assuming that home/away doesn't matter this year, we're significantly better than Louisiana, who is significantly better than Iowa State.

The face of the matter is that the committee is there to ensure that only one have not has access to the table. Since they are contractually obligated to put a G5 in, they aren't going to do us any favors. If we had been thumped by Boise State while playing our third strung QB, that wouldn't have hurt Boise State at all and they would be in the top 10.
