Of course, crashes and serious safety incidents trump all metrics; but the overall maintenance record, hours/cycles on a given airframe, and how many hours the average pilot has on a type are much better indicators of safety than airframe age.

I'll take a well-maintained, older aircraft with an experienced flight crew over a brand new jet with newbies on the flight deck any day of the week.
