Just a guess - BYU wanted a guard that could make a big immediate impact

And wanted a grad transfer instead (Averette). I’m not sure if that is the reason or if they just didn’t do a good evaluation— but given Pope’s track record I would assume it had more to do with wanting a grad transfer since there was a big immediate need at guard.
