A deceptive stat. Even in high % games, Hill's QBR was abysmal as a starter

Here are Hill's 2020-21 stats.

Hill definitely has a high completion percentage, but much of that is due to his role within the Saints' offense - he's a gadget player who is usually only called upon to throw once a game (often to a player that is wide open). That leads to plenty of games where Hill is 1/1 or 2/2 and 100% - an impressive stat, but not enough to make him a viable starter.

In the games this season where Hill did start, his QBR was terrible. In a loss to the Eagles, Hill had a completion percentage of nearly 74%, but also had a QBR of only 66.4. Hill's QBR in two games against the Falcons was 55.6 and 66.7; the Broncos completely stymied Hill, holding him to 9/16 passing, 78 yds, 1 INT and no TDs, with a QBR of 29.0. Those aren't starter numbers.

Hill absolutely is an outstanding athlete. He's a threat whenever he gets the ball and presents a mismatch against any other player on the field (either in regards to size, strength, or speed). But the offensive schemes the Saints ran with Hill were gimmicky, and his completion percentage in the NFL - built on short, easy throws to the flat and trick plays to wide-open receivers - is about Taysom's only good throwing-related stat. He's a useful gadget player, but he's not a starting QB and I think that any semi-objective observer would come away with that impression after watching Hill's 2020 season.
