I'm sure it depends on which metrics you're using, or how you define that. They were below average, but La. Tech and Texas State were supposedly worse. They were on par with a bunch of Pac 12, Big 12, and ACC teams in total defense. It's all relative, so really hard to say.

But BYU did what would be expected if BYU is as good as advertised, which is throttle UCT. The most impressive thing about the UCF game was BYU's defensive performance against UCF's formidable offense.
