I grew up there and loved it and my parents recently moved out. There is a lot of property crime in certain areas. I think what makes it different than bigger cities like LA is the percentage of the city that is a "bad area" is pretty high.

Avoid South Valley. Stay in the nicer areas of the city and you will not have any issues, really.
