Have you watched Foyle's War? She'll probably like it, but you might like the
WWII police mystery as well. Its not as gritty as Breaking Bad or those others but it was one I really liked. I watched every episode of every season (I think 7 or more seasons).
One note: its a British TV show where the episodes run ~90 minutes, like a full length movie. To me that allows for much better plot and character development than the US 60 minute format, but wanted to mention that.
