British: Sherlock, Foyle's War, Lewis. American: Psych, Monk, Chuck, West Wing
Those are almost all police/detective shows. The British ones are just a little serious, except for Sherlock. The American ones are funny (some more than others).

In my opinion, the first 4 seasons of West Wing are perhaps the best written and performed American TV show in the last 30 years. It's about a Democrat president and the politics are far from my own, but the writing and performances were so good, I didn't care.
