I'll second Lonesome Dove (though the prequel and sequel are garbage). I also
love The Cowboys with John Wayne and Bruce Dern. It's not your typical John Wayne. It's got a great story, amazing music (John Williams) and one of the best villains ever.
Also love Shane. It's old, but a great story with good interplay of loyalty/love/trust. Probably the greatest scenery of any western.
Watch the original Magnificent 7. The new one blows, but the old one is great. Great cast, nice character study re human nature, and good music in this one too.
Lastly, I'll say Three Amigo's and Blazing Saddles. They're westerns.
