STAR is Situation, Task, Action, Result. Tell them stories that shows your skills, and most importantly talk about the quantified result. Questions like, “Do you have experience doing xyz ?” shoukd be answered with a story. A basic story, even with small results “we delivered the project on time”, “i mended the relationship with the coworker” are better than a “yeah, I’m good at excel” answer.
Random fake example "We had to solve x problem and I was tasked with digging in. First, I talked with a co-worker who was an expert, second, I dug into the data and I noticed xyz, then I put together a recommendation that I shared with my team. They accepted my recommendation and I was asked to implement the plan. As a result, the problem was resolved and we made a billion dollars."
Asking questions is an important part as well. It shows how interested you are and that you are ready to dig in. A common question is "What keeps you up at night?" but in my opinion, a better question is "What is the #1 problem that I could solve for you in this role?".
