I've had several friends that have gotten in trouble for it. I've also left reviews before for items that had those notes (not to get them for free) and had the reviews disappear within a couple of weeks with the items disappearing a few days later. I had a friend that got hooked in with a company that would ship him stuff, he'd leave reviews and get his money back. After doing this with about 20 products he lost his review priviledges.
