Clayton and I have crossed paths for years in youth sports. I coached opposite him in basketball, baseball and football.
Our relationship was competitive but there was a genuine friendship there. He was such a good man.
The last time I saw him was at a baseball tournament down in Cedar City last June.
His boy took the mound against us on a sprained ankle. The kid could barely walk but still managed a complete game against us and got the win.
Clayton was so proud. You could see the joy it brought him watching his kid succeed. The love he had for his son was obvious.
I hated losing but was happy for my friend and fellow coach.
I am going to miss crossing paths with him. He was such a positive influence on the boys he coached. More times than once I thought to myself I need to coach more like Clayton.
The world lost a good one.
