Hah! He's spelling it like he hears it.
I grew up in Northern Utah and remember hearing people say "take it for granite" and could not for the life of me understand what a type of rock had to do with the sentiment they were expressing. I really had no idea the phrase was "take it for granted" until it finally clicked in my head one day. Gotta love that Utah accent.
