Regarding spending more in early retirement than later, I had a set of
grandparents where one had a severe stroke and the other soon got alzheimers. They were both physically pretty healthy, but had to live in care centers that were insanely expensive. Even though they travelled a lot in their 60's and into their 70's, I think they spent much much more money in their last three or four years when they were in their late-80's. Sure, from about 75 to about 85, I don't think they spent hardly any money.
