He guards his guy...and everyone else's. That's kind of the point.
He destroys every other player in the league on advanced defensive analytics. It's because what he does affects all five players on the court, not just the particular player he is individually guarding.
Teams shoot more than 6% worse whenever he's on the court...whole teams...not just the guy he's guarding. No one else in the NBA even comes close to that.
If you want him to guard one guy and shut him down, he may not be your guy.
If you want someone who makes the entire other team shoot worse...he's your guy.
The Jazz are not full of lockdown defenders, and yet by this metric they are the number one defense in the league. It doesn't take much brain power to know why...
