Seems Rockhound knows more about Hammond, but no matter what you choose
the area has plenty of excellent day hikes if backpacking isn't going to work out for your family.

Anything up and down the east side of Comb's Ridge is great for day hikes and car camping. Up on Cedar Mesa, you have a mix of everything from easy to hard, single day to multi day.

My recommendation for the area is to try and find stuff of the beaten path that isn't plastered all over published blogs and internet info. Most visitors see 20% of the ruins and sites, which is certainly worthwhile, but the those sites are 'sanitized' in my opinion with so many people going in and out of them.
